Why are you running for this office? It has and always will be my belief that education is a tool when used judiciously can ensure that the future of our country. As a current member of the Metro Board of Education, decision making is a vital part of the success of this organization. What we do as policy-makers will heavily impact teachers, students, parents and the entire community. Strong schools build strong communities and strong leaders. Board members must be trained to do the job effectively.
What do you expect to accomplish? My priority is to create policy that would allow our schools to reach every child. Take a hard look at more choices for our students. We must restore the programs that proved to be successful. My goal is to see Career Academies in every middle and high school across the district. Why are you running for this office? I am running because I believe that there is NO EXCUSE for anything short of excellence in our public schools; other cities with similar demographics are achieving excellence with vision and courage, and with sustained high expectations for students to achieve all they are capable of achieving academically. Nashville is letting its demographics serve as intimidating excuses, and the Federal program “No Child Left Behind” define limited goals for our students. Our students and our community deserve more.
What do you expect to accomplish? I believe that my considerable academic and particularly senior leadership experience at both Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College will allow me to foster more productive interactions across the racial and generational divides currently on the Board. I will be able to bring my large organizational experience to the alignment of budgets and measurable outcomes to the goals of our public school system. Furthermore, I will rely on my demonstrated ability to foster partnerships to bring new in-kind resources to our schools, so that our Federal, State, and local dollars can be invested in additional staff, teachers, professional development, and program materials to MNPS.
